Video Pitch for graffiti photography

Photography Evaluation

In this unit, we studied different techniques of photography. For each technique, there were different setting and shooting technique and by learning all these brought my photographic skills on higher level. After we went through different techniques we got a task to research on two photographic topics from which I chose to research about Music and Fashion Photography. As the final task of this unit, I had to research my own topic and create my own photographs.

I chose to photograph different graffiti. I produced a mind map and a video pitch as a part of my research towards graffiti magazines and I went to visit places in London that are connected the most to the graffiti. I visited South Bank skatepark and Waterloo Tunnel as these places were filled with every aspect of graffiti that I needed. These photographs are aimed for young people that are interesting in the art of graffiti. The magazines I chose to produce the photographs for are Inner City and Graffiti Art. My work was inspired by the work of famous graffiti artists such as Banksy, C215 and David Choe. From all those artists I feel like my work is the most similar to David Choe's work as he creates more of popular urban graffiti similar in a way to those I photographed. I consider my work to be urban styled, the usual classical graffiti you are able to find in skate parks and graffiti walls.

The technique I used for taking the pictures was wide angle to capture the whole drawings and also landscape to view the landscape of the whole skatepark/tunnel that I photographed the graffiti in. I used DSLR camera and also tripod. At the end of the photography process I edited them using photoshop and created video presentation. As I finished creating my video presentation of my graffiti photographs I asked for a feedback from my classmates.

As a result from the feedback I got I know I have to improve for next time to work more on the lighting of my photographs perhaps use better flash and also try to capture the photographs at places with more lighting. As for the positive feedback I did well at the locations and my own idea.

Video of my graffiti photography

Shallow depth of field

For shallow depth of field I was trying to achieve the effect of the front object to be sharp and the rest of the background blurry. Using my DSLR camera I had the aperture set to priority and it was set to the lowest F point which was probably around 3.2 or 4. This setting is often used in portrait photography.

Large Depth of field photographs

For Large Depth of field photographic technique the aim is to have both foreground and background in focus. To achieve this, I set up my DSLR camera to aperture priority and was shooting with single shot. The aperture was set to the smallest possible with highest F number set around 18 - 22 and above. This is used often in landscape photography.

Framing an image photographs

The technique used for this set of pictures is called the Framing. The aim for this technique is to achieve the viewer to see a certain point in the photographs and this is created by ''framing'' the point in the photograph which attracts the eye of the viewers attention.

Fast shutter speed photographs

For this set of pictures, we captured water dripping, to create an effect that captures the movement of the drops. We used DSLR cameras with the shutter speed of 1/225 per second or higher. The shutter speed played the main role in taking the photographs as the speed will capture the very fast movement of the drops and also needs it to be sharp and avoid it to be blurry. While taking these photographs, some came out really blurry and in this case you should try to keep the camera still as much as possible and focus on the drip area and use a tripod, although it is very difficult to capture the drops close from some angles with tripod. I could have also use stronger lights like a flash gun this additional light would have allowed me to use a faster shutter speed. For next time, I would try to improve the effect of the water and try to colour it to create more interesting image.
